My parents, Craig & Jean, just got back from two weeks at their farm in Iowa. Needless to say, Dad immediately got a new shipment of supplies unloaded and hilled the potatoes. Mom helped with the weekly CSA harvest and tackled some persistent quackgrass (a redundancy, I know). It’s great to have them back. The veggies and pigs have been perking along in the last few weeks, and the winter squash is already twice as big as it was when I took these photos.
See Stone’s Throw Farm in person this weekend during the LS-SFA’s Festival of Farms event.

Just A Google Away

I was first notified of the updated Google photos of the Wrenshall area last fall by Jacob at the Food Farm. He and Janaki had been looking at the new satellite views and were having fun trying to figure out exactly when the photos had been taken. The steel for our quonset building was sitting by the driveway at Stone’s Throw Farm, so Jacob asked if I knew when it was delivered, but I don’t think I ever looked it up for him. (The steel arrived August 22, 2010.)
It’s fun for me to zoom in and be able to see what was in each bed in the east field, and I thought it might be fun for people who haven’t been able to visit the farm to see an aerial view. (It’s too bad the piggies were in their huts.) Right across the road to the east is Northern Harvest Farm, of course, and if you keep panning east until you see County Rd 1 and then pan south a few times, you’ll run into the fields at the Food Farm. The wonders of technology, eh?

I know it’s no Superior Hiking Trail vista or other gorgeous fall sight, but there are a few things on the farm that have kept my eyes interested lately — the husk cherry vines after a hard freeze, the dark blue-green of the broccoli plants contrasted with the light green of the berseem clover, the goldenrod seeding out along the tree line. See for yourself.
The Color of August

Green is nice, but the warmer colors seen around the farm right now are pretty easy on the eyes. We still have plenty of green, of course — too much in some spots! The pathways between the onions and first carrot bed got away from me in June, but since a lot of the weeds were volunteer clover, I’m calling it a cover crop.
Rain + Sun = Happy Veggies

Even though we got 1.1 inches of rain Wednesday morning at Stone’s Throw Farm, it’s already pretty dry around the veggie field. I’ll have to do some irrigating this weekend unless we get a bunch of rain tonight and tomorrow morning.
The first planting of green beans, while still short in stature, are starting to bloom. This is actually good because our peas won’t last much longer.
When I took this photo of the pigs, they had been up and about for quite a while. Of course, by the time I arrived with my camera, they had settled in under this wagon for a nap and weren’t going to budge.
