Don’t they look funny with their little ears still plastered back to their heads? The first litter of 2012 piglets was born at my parents’ farm on Sunday evening, and the second Tuesday morning about 2 a.m. (My faithful dad stayed up to monitor and help if needed.) Each litter has 8 piglets, and I sincerely hope they all live. They’re pretty vulnerable at this stage — as you can see the sows are much, much bigger than the piglets, and sometimes they accidentally squish one. My parents use farrowing crates for a little while to try to prevent that; the crates confine the sows to the middle of the pen so the piglets have an area on the sides where they can hang out and be safe. The sows get up and move around several times a day — they go outside to eat, drink, and get a little exercise.
I wish I was there to see them in person, don’t you?
By the way, we still have summer CSA shares available.
They’re adorable! Congratulations on the new babies!
I have been looking forward to the new piglet series of pictures — they look great!
