Believe it or not, it’s not going to be just me, myself, and I (and sometimes Elden) at the farm next year.
My parents are purchasing a little house just 3 1/2 miles away from Stone’s Throw Farm. They’re keeping their place in western Iowa, but plan to spend a lot more time in Wrenshall next summer. They close on the house tomorrow and will start making it a home in the next week or two. (Luckily for them, I heard through the grapevine that there’s a new support group forming in the area called POOF: Parents Of Organic Farmers.)
In addition, my friend Heather-Marie Bloom will be operating her business, Rising Phoenix Community Farm, from Stone’s Throw Farm next year! Heather-Marie farmed at our friend Kelly Smith’s place in Esko this season but was looking for a little more garden space for next year, which we just happen to have at Stone’s Throw. Heather-Marie interned across the road at Northern Harvest Farm in 2010 and it’ll be great to have her back in Wrenshall. She’ll be doing her own thing at our place, but we’ll be able to help each other out in numerous ways, not the least of which is keeping each other sane during potentially mind-numbing tasks such as planting garlic.
Change is good.
I am so glad you are going to have some people working with you or beside you or in cooperation with you — and to keep you company!
I remember my uncle Dale’s farm as a place where there were many people doing all kinds of jobs, but I was there in the summer. During the winter I am sure there were days he only saw the cows he fed.
Yes, change is good, usually. Good Luck to you and your parents. My best wishes to all of you.
