Here’s the pigs enjoying some fresh pasture — the oat and pea plants I was talking about earlier. I noticed a blossom on a field pea plant the other day, and I bet the pigs will really enjoy the little pea pods the plants will make. I know many farm members are looking forward to the big pea pods our snap pea plants will make, and they’re blooming right now, too.
The pigs are up eating and doing who knows what during the night, especially when it’s hot during the day, so they like to sleep in mornings. Below, they are just getting up and saying good morning to me. The pig making the most noise (toward the end of the video) is the one I call Squealy Pig. She always has a lot to say.
Are you using the clanky grain feeder this year? Or are these pigs on nothing but pasture?
I know you got used to hearing the clanking last summer. So did I. :>
These pigs don’t seem to be as interested as playing as last year’s either. Amazing how different one batch can be from another. Have you observed many differences?
Hi, Diane. These pigs are definitely different than last year’s, but they’re not any less playful. Sometimes they all run around and around their huts until they can’t breathe. I just haven’t managed to capture it on video. They also seem to enjoy untying people’s shoelaces whenever anyone goes into their pen. Even double knots don’t phase them. Also, because some of them were orphans, my parents had to spend a lot of time messing with them when they were babies and they got used to plenty of back scratching. Some of them flop over on their sides like dogs offering their tummies for rubbing when I scratch their backs.
I’m using the same type of feeder as last year, but Elden made a tin shade to go over them so I could wire the trough lids open. The clanking hardly ever woke me at night, but I worried it might bother my neighbors. Also, the shade seems to keep rain out of the feeder troughs so the feed doesn’t spoil.
