On Thursday evening I was working in the hoophouse near the pigpen, and I heard what sounded like a dog running around the pen, panting and harassing the pigs. I hurried out there and found the pigs just running around and around in their pen until they couldn’t breathe. There wasn’t anything chasing them; they were just having fun.
The sod they’re busting in the first video is 20-year sod, as far as I know. No one has plowed it for at least that long, but they obviously have no trouble ripping it to shreds.
I meant to ask you earlier what the pigs are digging for.
Do they root around to find grubs or such to eat? They seem to be chomping on something, but the sticks they seem to carry around.
Amazing how easy it is for them to dig up the grass.
Hi, Diane! The pigs eat grubs, worms, roots (they like quackgrass, which is helpful), and I don’t really know what else. It’s hard to tell what they’re munching on, but I’ve seen them gobble up earthworms for sure. They do eat some blades of grass, too. They really like oats, so I’ve planted some for them that I hope will be ready by July. The stick was a tree that had obviously been mowed off a bunch of times that Elden pulled out of the ground. I threw it to the pigs to see what they would do with it, and they seemed to enjoy playing keep away with it for a while.
They already look like they have doubled in size since they arrived up there.
