The pigs at Stone’s Throw Farm don’t have an ideal pasture — they’re on the rye that I planted last fall instead of something fresh and yummy like oats and peas. But they make do. They’d probably do a better job of turning the soil if I only gave them a 10 x 10 foot space at a time and moved them every day or two, but once you’ve seen them running around of an evening, clearly enjoying themselves, it’s difficult to confine them to a small area. I got a little bit of footage of the bounciest pig running by, with one of her friends trailing behind. I wish I had a video of the bouncy pig running around the wagon three times just for fun, as she is apt to do on a cool night.
The pigs so enjoy trying to chew on the garden hose whenever I give them a shower that I decided to give them a few pieces of old hose as toys. They sometimes do the “break its neck” shake with veggies I give them, too.
Here’s a little video of the big gilt making herself a mudhole, and then flopping around in it like a beached fish for a while. It was really hot Sunday so I had to fill up some big mudholes with water for the pigs to cool off in, and of course they all wanted to pile into the same one. There was a lot of flopping going on, let me tell you. I didn’t get any video that day, though.
