Not so many years ago, it took a lot of effort to drag myself into the office by 9 am. When I started working at Caretaker Farm in 2007, I had to get up at 5:30 in order to get enough coffee in my system to start work at 6:15. But I was lucky I was addicted to caffeine, because the 20 minutes or so I spent sitting under the pergola drinking that coffee and looking out over the flower garden and the fields was the best part of my day. For part of the season, I got to watch the sunrise.
Now when I sleep in the camper at Stone’s Throw Farm, I wake up eager to get out and look around. The veggies aren’t yet wilting in the heat of the sun, instead appearing perky and crisp. The pigs might still be up and about if it was a cool night. Pickups haven’t started driving by on the road yet and the tractors and lawnmowers are resting in their sheds. I might see a deer or two grazing in the hayfield next door. They watch me for a while, tails twitching, but they’re not too concerned. I’m only armed with a camera and a travel mug.
Thanks for the uplifting words and images! You’ve found your own piece of paradise, it seems!
