I let the piggies out of their original 16′ x 16′ pen into a corner of the rye field yesterday. They seemed to really enjoy munching on the grass and grubs and rooting with their powerful snouts. So much for their white “points”! (The Berkshire breed typically has white feet and noses.)
I sort of knew pigs rooted around, at least in a barnyard, but had no idea they could or would root up a tall rye grass field.
Amazing!
And they ARE adorable.
I well remember “walking” our 4-H hogs, much like a dog gets walked. They were so excited to get out of their pen and get to explore the farmyard. You’ll have to see if Mom and Dad will collect a bucket of walnuts for you to give the pigs as treats this fall, like we did at the county fair!
